If you walked into an interview knowing exactly what the interviewer wanted to hear from the ideal candidate, and gave a convincing performance, you could be certain that you would stand a good chance of success. Once you know what questions you are likely to be asked, and what information the interviewer will be looking for in your answers, you can decide on the best way to reply. You can prepare answers which highlight the qualities you possess which make you suitable for selection.
However, answering questions well involves a number of factors other than knowing what information you want to give. Interviewers can discover quite a lot about candidates from the way that they structure their answers and speak.
Under the pressure which many of us feel in interviews, answering questions well is not always easy. The best way to overcome this problem is to prepare thoroughly, deciding what information you want to give and then practicing giving your answers so that they create the best I possible impression.
Selecting the successful candidate
After all the candidates have been interviewed, the information gathered about them is used to decide how they compare with the ‘ideal’. Many factors are considered, not all of which necessarily relate directly to how well they could do the job. The way candidates dress (does it fit the company ‘image’?), their personality (will they get on well with others?), their ambitions (will they stay long enough to make it worthwhile training them?), their expectations for the job (will they be too impatient for promotion?), and a host of other things will be taken into account. You need to consider these factors as a part of your preparation.
